AION 2 high ping for overseas players: server regions and the 200 ms problem
Big Asian MMOs launch with servers concentrated in a few regions, so a large share of the player base plays from far away. That creates a latency floor no client-side product can remove — but it also means the remaining part is worth measuring properly.
Know your floor
Light in fibre travels at roughly 200,000 km/s, so a round trip of 20,000 km costs about 100 ms before any router, queue or congestion is involved. If you are playing a Korean or Japanese realm from Europe or the Americas, most of your ping is arithmetic. Check the realm list for a closer regional server before optimising anything.
Separate distance from routing
Distance gives you a high but steady number. Routing problems give you a number that jumps, especially at peak hours. Run a test twice — once at off-peak and once in prime time — and compare the spread rather than the average.
Stable and high: region choice is the lever. Unstable and high: your own connection comes first.
What helps for cross-region play
- Pick the region with the best worst-case ping for your group, not the best average.
- Use a wired connection; every millisecond of wireless retransmission is paid twice on a long path.
- Enable QoS if the line is shared.
- If one specific route to the region is consistently worse than another at similar distance, that is the case where a route optimiser is worth testing on a trial.
