What actually reduces latency

A comparison of the five things players try, what each one can honestly fix, and when it is the right call. We compare approaches, not products we have not tested.

Approach What it can fix What it cannot fix Cost Right call when
Free local fixes Wireless loss, jitter, bufferbloat, double NAT Distance, ISP routing, game servers Free Always. Do this before paying for anything.
Changing DNS Name resolution and the first connection The route your match traffic takes Free Connection setup times out, not for ping.
A VPN Privacy and region access Latency — it usually adds to it Subscription Not for latency reasons.
Route optimiser (game booster) Congestion or bad peering on the middle route Local instability, distance, servers Subscription One route is consistently worse than another at the same distance.
Console router with optimised routing Applies route optimisation to a console Wi-Fi problems in your own home, distance Hardware + subscription The console cannot install software and the route is the problem.

Why we do not publish product scores yet

Our editorial policy says we do not rate anything we have not used. We have the tools and the method ready; what is missing is a documented hands-on test per product and region. Until that exists we publish comparisons of approaches, vendor facts with their source, and the checklist below.

What a hands-on review will contain when we publish one

Method, regions tested, time of day, raw distributions instead of a single number, the price we actually paid, and the cases where the tool did nothing. If we cannot publish the failures, we will not publish the review.

The short version

Measure first. If your connection is unstable, fix it locally — that is free and permanent. If it is stable but slow, check the game region before buying anything. Route optimisation is a narrow tool for one specific situation, and it is worth testing on a trial rather than trusting a page like this one.
